My little morning walk
Share
Every morning, I walk through my neighborhood for about 40 minutes. 40 minutes might seem like a pretty long time to be walking, every day, but for me it's nothing. I barely feel it. The reason why is because it is built-in to my life. And it's one of my favorite things right now.
For one thing, it's time I'm spending with my daughter. We have a purpose with this walk - I'm walking her to the bus. Then walking back alone. During that time, we chat about anything. It's our time to connect. We share an interest in nature, so we're always noticing what's different about the sky, or finding garden snails to pick off the sidewalk.
On my way back, I pop in my headphones. Sometimes I listen to audio books, sometimes I listen to music. Lately I've been listening to podcasts - I like listening to different points of view, or learning things I didn't know anything about before.
Slowly, I'm getting to know my neighborhood. The black cat we see strolling around independently is not the same guy on the missing cat sign, and so far I have counted 6 different golden retrievers. This morning, I noticed only one house has put up Halloween decorations. I saw 7 hummingbirds, too. 7!
It seems like a simple, dumb thing. Maybe the fact that it's so basic is why it works so well. My little morning walk gives me steps, fresh air, usually sunshine, and a chance to peek out at the wold and say 'hi' every morning. Without it, I'd have none of that.
